What Are Website
Templates are undeniably useful, they’re fairly easy to implement and make websites much cheaper to build. Templates come with many disadvantages, which in our opinion is enough to avoid using them altogether.
Before we explain all of the different components and characteristics that make web templates something to be avoided, let’s clear something up first. Often when we tell people that web templates detract from their business’ image, they stop us and ask, "Then why do you sell templates on your website?" The answer is in two-parts;
Don't Be Fooled
There are a lot of domain registration and hosting companies that offer "do it yourself" template websites, and there's nothing wrong with that.
What's wrong is when they tell you they can build your website for you, offer you a "consultant" or a "team" to work on "building" your website, then charge you a monthly fee for the "service" (somehow attached to your hosting fee); and all you're really getting is someone placing photos and text in a web template (not an original design).
Other "DIY" website companies offer web templates, domain registration and hosting in a package (for an excessive monthly fee). You choose your domain name (www.yourcompany.com), the web template, then you fill it in with your content. The only thing they don't tell you it that they own your domain. If for any reason you miss one monthly payment, your website goes offline. Even when you make the payment, your web template is blank, and you'll have fill it in all over again.
Convey Your Brand
Template websites are designed to be sold to you (the person purchasing the template) and not to your customers, and many business owners get into the trap thinking that if the template looks good to them it will look good to their clients.
Templates are intentionally meant to be generic, that way template designers (re-sellers and retailers) can sell more of them. The problem with this is that they don’t capture the look and feel of client’s established brand.
Life would be great if competition didn't exist and you were the only business around offering your products and services. However, we know that’s not life and businesses must communicate to potential clients what differentiates them from their competitors and why their potential clients should choose them.
Every company has an identity even if it hasn’t been formalized. Therefore it’s very important to understand the company and convey their individuality (or personality) through their website. This is something a template design (no matter how appealing) can ever achieve. This is what our Web Development and Design Team achieves every day.
Built Around Content
Web templates project the wrong idea because components that are vital to creating a successful website; such as branding, usability, effective content, etc., (all of which are instrumental to creating a powerful and useful design) instead, the work becomes marginalized to simply filling the holes in the design with text and images. Let’s not even get into the Search Engine Optimization process and all of the things behind your website to make it not only function properly, but be accurately recognized by the search engines.
It is our responsibility as Developers, Designers and Programmers to educate you (the client) about the development and design process. We are more than just “pixel pushers” (in which a lot of potential clients consider web developers/designers/programmers to be).
You absolutely need a website to be competitive in today's economy. A website is a significant and essential conduit for presenting your businesses information and services. With over 80 percent of the U.S. population having internet access, owning a website is critical to conducting business in today’s society; it allows you (the business owner) to contend with your competitors on the same level.
Here's the exception to the rule: It's actually better to have no website at all than to have one that makes your business look bad. Your website speaks volumes about your business. It either says, "Hey, look, we take our business so seriously that we have invested in ourselves and created this wonderful website for our customers!" or it screams, "Hey, look, I let my 16-year-old nephew design my website. Good luck finding anything!" Consumers will not spend much time at your website, if your website looks shoddy, cheap or disorganized.
The point of effective website design is not only to look good, but also to look unique. If you're working from a template that has been resold to thousands of other businesses, the visual representation of your business completely lacks uniqueness and regardless of the number of times your web template has been resold, a web template will never set your business apart from your competition. Period!
